When The Comedy Store opened there in 1972 the venue once again got a new life. The post-Ciro’s days: It’s Boss, with Lovin’ Spoonful on the marquee. As Mario Maglieri’s son Mikeal recalls: I gave Janis Joplin her last drink, four shots of Southern Comfort, and dad said, ‘Put the bottle in her trunk. Ciro’s even got quite the feature in Hollywood Steps Out, a Looney Tunes short released in 1941. Less than three weeks after Jimi Hendrix’s death, on October 4, 1970, Janis Joplin was found dead of a heroin overdose in the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood. Ciro’s saw its fair share of stars walk through the doors and they were always in high style. Today it is The Comedy Store, but from 1940 to 1957 this club was pure glamour. The Whisky A-Go-Go became the principal hangout of Sunset Strip musicians and hipsters in the 1960s - and it was hip enough for Dustin Hoffmans character. Hollywood movie stars made it a regular event to dress in their finest and eat, drink, and dance the night away at this famous club. It is located at 8901 Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip, corner North Clark Street, opposite North San Vicente Boulevard, northwest corner. Much like the Savoy Club in the 1930s or the Whiskey a Go Go in the 1960s, Ciro’s in Los Angeles was once the place to be for the most fashionable people of the day.
